Steps to Follow When Cleaning Your Skagen Watch

Skagen watches can be beautiful timepieces. As such, it is very crucial to understand the steps to follow when cleaning your watch. The cleaning steps do differ and depend largely on the material of your watchband. While normally not difficult at all, it is necessary to follow the simple steps of cleaning your watch. In doing so you will avoid the risk of potentially damaging your valuable piece of jewelry.

If your timepiece has a metal band, you are going to need a cleaning mixture that will adequately clean your watch. Before you mix this together, however, make certain you have on rubber gloves before doing this. Next, stir together an ammonia-based window cleaner with water, or rubbing alcohol with water, into a bowl.

The recommended proportions for the ammonia-based window cleaner are three parts window cleaner to one part water. The rubbing alcohol should be mixed at four parts alcohol to one part water. Once you have your desired solution mixed, find a nonabrasive rag for cleaning the watch. Lightly soak the rag and ring out completely. Take the rag and gently wipe it over the face and case of the watch.

For the next step you have the option of either using a cotton swab, or the same rag as before, if you choose. If the watchband is a metal mesh, then you will need a soft bristled brush, like a toothbrush. Dip the appropriate tool into the cleaner and wipe it down the watchband.

Once again, if your wristband is a metal mesh, find a piece of plastic that you can use to seal the watch face with. This will keep the face safe and ensure that no cleaning solution has a chance of damaging the inner workings of the timepiece. Completely immerse the toothbrush into the cleaning solution and begin scrubbing the metal mesh until it is cleaned to your satisfaction.

Leather or rubber wristbands require a separate cleaning method. The first step is to wet the soft rag into clean water and gently wipe away any dirt or smears from the band. If the wristband is made of rubber, however, this is all the cleaning the band requires. However, smooth leather bands need to be rubbed down with a leather conditioner on occasion.

This conditioner will ensure your band does not dry out. However, while there is no specific rule stating how many times this should be done during the course of the watches life, you should not have to do this after every cleaning. How often you need to condition the leather will depend largely on your situation. Every few months or so, or when the wristband seems to be drying out, is mostly the accepted rule. After you finish applying the conditioner to the leather, wipe the band down once with a dry and soft rag and you are done.
